Burris Laboratory School at Ball State University welcomes applications for an Instructor of Elementary Education.
This role includes overseeing individualized programming, supporting diverse learning needs, and working collaboratively with colleagues. Responsibilities also involve maintaining ongoing communication with families and Burris partners. We are seeking a candidate who is dedicated to supporting the school’s vision and mission.
Compensation/salary is determined and based upon relevant experience and highest degree earned, with a salary range of $48,500–$74,312.
Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without sponsorship.

What you'll do and what you will bring:

Duties and Responsibilities:

a. Creates engaging, effective lesson and unit plans aligned to current Indiana Standards that drive instruction and include prior assessment data, objectives, allocating an instructionally appropriate amount of time, designing meaningful and relevant assignments, and assessments created before the unit for backwards planning.


b. Demonstrates mastery of content knowledge, instructional strategies and curriculum used for courses taught.


c. Implements effective differentiated instruction to provide an effective classroom program and meet the needs of individual students.


d. Instructs students and checks for understanding using a variety of analytical methods that incorporate prior knowledge, life experience and interests to make adjustments to instruction.


e. Assesses student progress toward learning targets, objectives, expectations and goals to provide feedback to students, parents, and administrators and guide future classroom instruction.


f. Utilizes available technology and instructional media to enhance the student-learning experiences.


g. Directs pre-service teachers, instructional assistants and volunteers to provide an effective classroom environment to address the needs of individual students.


h. Develops and/or participates in collaborative research projects with university and school faculty.


i. Monitors students in a variety of educational settings (e.g. classroom, playground, hallways, restrooms, field trips, etc.) to provide a safe, secure and positive learning environment.


j. Establishes and maintain appropriate relationships with students, parents, faculty and staff by communicating in a professional, courteous and confidential manner and adhering to Burris Laboratory School's social media policy.


k. Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to communicate expectations, student achievement and developing strategies for improvement or reinforcement of classroom objectives in the home environment.


l. Demonstrates a commitment to continuous professional growth and attends and participates in professional development opportunities, faculty meetings, extra-curricular activities and committees.


m. Participates in professional development and meetings to gather or share information required to perform functions and improve student achievement.


n. Reports incidents (e.g. suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, zero tolerance offenses, etc.) to administrators to maintain the personal safety of students and provide a positive learning environment that adheres to state law and Ball State University policies.


o. Maintains a professional appearance as outlined in the Burris Laboratory School Faculty Handbook, and demonstrates behavior that is diplomatic and responsible.


p. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


q. Possess knowledge of Ball State University and Burris Laboratory School policies and procedures.


r. Knowledge of appropriate local, state and federal educational laws, policies, codes or regulations. Knowledge and utilization of instructional strategies and behavior management techniques.


t. Skill in operating Macintosh hardware and classroom projector utilizing a variety of software applications.


u. Skill in operating standard office equipment.


v. Skill in preparing and maintaining accurate records.


w. Ability to gain additional training and/or certification for specialized teaching assignments.


x. Ability to gain and hold Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification.


y. Ability to work outside normal working hours.


z. Ability to be flexible and work with others in a wide variety of circumstances.


aa. Ability to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups.


ab. Ability to maintain confidentiality.


ac. Ability to travel to conferences and visit schools when necessary.


ad. Ability to work flexible hours.


ae. Ability to project professional behavior in all forms of communication with stakeholders.


af. Ability to lift and carry heavy, bulky supplies and materials weighing up to 20 pounds.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from an accredited institution by date of appointment; hold or demonstrate eligibility for Indiana teaching certification in Elementary Education.

  • At least one semester teaching, or student teaching experience in an elementary school.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in elementary education from an accredited university.

  • At least three years of experience teaching at the primary level; evidence of knowledge and skill in using educational technologies; evidence of knowledge and skill in working effectively with children with special needs and/or high ability.


Required Certifications:

  • Indiana certification appropriate to the assignment or be able to obtain an emergency license.

  • Ability to gain and hold Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification.
