Sarah Lawrence College invites applications for faculty to teach in the Sarah Lawrence Extension, an exciting program dedicated to supporting lifelong learning in our community. Options include short courses (2 hours/ week for 6 weeks), one-off lectures (typically one hour), stand-alone seminars (typically 2 hours), and thematically connected seminars (one seminar/ month over 3 or 4 months).

Faculty from all disciplines of the arts and sciences are welcome to apply. We are especially interested in faculty who are able to teach topics that will engage an intellectually curious general public adult audience.

There is flexibility in the mode of delivery of the courses and lectures. Most programs will be taught on-site at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville NY or at a senior living community in Westchester or southern Connecticut. Some will be taught online on Zoom. Programming will be offered during the day and in the evening.

It is important that Extension faculty teach according to the educational practices and philosophy of Sarah Lawrence College. Lectures are interactive and should include use of engaging visuals, and student participation through elicitation, pair work, and questions throughout. Seminars are discussion-based small classes, usually with a maximum of 15 participants.
Applicants should submit a brief cover letter that includes your availability, your areas of interest and a description of your teaching philosophy; a curriculum vitae; a brief (one paragraph each) course descriptions for two proposed courses; and a 10-minute sample recording of you teaching a mini-lecture. This should demonstrate a student-centered approach to teaching and can be accompanied by a description of how it would fit into a longer interactive lecture or seminar. This can be the same topic as one of the two courses you suggest. Please save this recording on the cloud and provide a link to the recording. In addition, applicants should provide the names and contact information for at least two professional references.

Compensation listed for this position is on a per-course/lecture/seminar basis.

A doctorate or other terminal degree in your field is preferred, though PhD candidates and those who have ABD status are also invited to apply. Increased consideration will be given to candidates with a record of effective college-level teaching and/ or experience teaching older adults.
